Helen’s Place LLC Update: July 19, 2022
You’ve decided it’s time to start looking for a new job, but you’re still working and very busy. This is exactly the right time to secure a new position if you can do it, before leaving your current job. Looking for a new job is like undertaking a temporary, extra job in itself.
If you can develop the emotional fitness in a job search, by applying to at least one job a day, this may be enough to secure a better future.
It may not be easy to motivate yourself to do this if you have family, or other obligations, but well worth it in the end. Even without distractions, you may procrastinate if you have a fear of failure, or the job search seems difficult to you.
Don’t accept excuses from yourself, or from other people who may be enabling you to do less than you’re capable of doing. Don’t try to tell yourself that the job you have isn’t that bad, and stop yourself from looking for a new one.
Too often, a person stays in a bad job for too long, and they end up losing it anyway. This is why it’s far better to get out when you see the handwriting on the wall.
The bottom line is, you have reasons why you’re looking for a new job that are important to you, so stagnation will bother you more than taking action.
If you feel uncomfortable and try to stop yourself from applying to at least one job a day, do it anyway.
Once you get into the habit, you’ll feel better because you’re in action to make changes happen in your life. Over time, you’ll increase your emotional fitness in your job search.
If it were easy, more people would line up a job before they left the last one; it isn’t.
Build momentum. Adopt a one-foot in-front-of the-other approach, and don’t worry about whether or not you get an interview out of any particular job application you’re working on.
It takes time to start getting interviews after you’ve built up enough job applications.
Be sure to keep a job search log/spreadsheet with the job title, company name, contact information, and date of application or contact, as well as a generous section to add your notes. In addition to your log,
remember to save a copy of the job description and the tailored resume you send out for each job you apply to. This way you’ll be ready to prepare for a phone or in person interview, should you get one.
The most important emotional fitness job search tip is the following:
If after three months of applying for jobs you don’t get an interview, tweak your resume or job search strategy. If after three months you start getting interviews but don’t get a job offer, work on your interview skills.

Good video to review before you start applying for jobs. It will help you gain clarity as to why you’re leaving your current job and how you’ll answer questions about it from potential new employers in future job interviews.
