Description of Character Flashcards:

The Feather Birdhouse Character Flashcards and Roadblock Educational GameTM can be used in many different ways to build characters in a story or to build character.

They can be used to accompany the book, The Feather Birdhouse or Birds on the Move or in freestyle, to be used individually or in groups using keywords provided on each card, or in matching picture games for younger children.

Additionally, the traditional suits can be used for traditional or modified games.  Each of the four suits has special meaning based on the birds it represents.  Flashcards can also be used to build a card tower as a character team building exercise.

All cards have an illustration of birds or birds on the face.  There is a number below each card illustration consisting of a card number, dash, and chapter number, followed by a keyword(s), a scenario, and a question.

There are at least two cards for each chapter, so if you’re teaching the book, you can put the cards in chapter order to discuss the story and bird characters in each chapter.  In addition to the questions on the card, there are questions for each chapter the end of the book.

For an added learning experience, including non-reading younger children,  download the E-book from Apple Books and listen to the bird sound enhanced audio files at the end of each chapter that correspond to the bird(s)  on the card(s).

Description of Roadblock Game:

Divide the flashcards by how many are in your group (recommended minimum of 4 cards each), or have individuals pick cards.  It’s not necessary for the new stories to follow the book, as these spin-off stories foster creative and independent thinking.

Children can make up their own individual story, or as a group write a story and either talk about it or act it out.  They are challenged to figure out what they would do in a given situation.

They are asked to answer one or more of four questions and see samples provided, i.e.:

How did your character(s) get around the roadblock, or try to solve the problem?  Did your character make it better or worse for themselves by their decision?

Example:

Roadblock:  In the Feather Birdhouse story Squawky, a great-grackle, is searching for the Doves and realizes he’s alone.

Solution:  He decides to go on a quest to find a girlfriend, which isn’t the best solution because it leads to all kinds of trouble.  In the end he figures out where he fits into the bird world.

Additional Suggestions for Use:

English Language Arts teachers can integrate curriculum with Nature Studies, Science and Art teachers, including facts about bird species, bird migration, environmental hazards, and wildlife conservation.  Children are encouraged to draw birds and create their own reports and stories about birds.
