Some Americans were so distracted by arguments over whether or not to “defund ICE” that they didn’t realize that the American immigration system – that handles legal as well as illegal immigration – was already wrecked by the Trump administration in 2025.
This action involved misinterpreting existing immigration laws and using presidential executive orders without congressional approval.
For the Trump 2.0 immigration system, a whole new set of terms and talking points were created. This included calling people “illegal alien criminals“ instead of “illegal non-immigrants.” Tacking on the word “criminal”– when most are not criminals in the legal sense of the word, has been used effectively to smear non-whites. Describing Haitians in Ohio as eating dogs and cats, has also become commonplace.
