Counteracting Hatefulness

Watching wild birds evokes sheer joy, and birding makes it easier to withstand a mean world; a place which requires constant effort to be a constructive person.

In this context, constructiveness involves assessing what’s going on,  navigating to make tough choices at every turn, and being willing to help others if there’s something one can do.

Take for example the recent State of Florida threats to Catholic schools for refusing to remove its mandate that kids get vaccinated before starting school.

As absurd as this is, that’s the nonsensical, mean government we want to navigate away from.

The government has caused the worst measles outbreak since the 1990’s and the deaths of children.  What people can do about this now is to protest and vote to ensure that more constructive people are in charge in the future, and pass laws affecting health that prevent illness.

Imagine if all Americans, including those in the current administration,  learned birdwatching as children?  They might be making fewer mistakes now.

Getting There Through Birding

Cultivating constructive action through activities like birding would help America become a stronger, more discerning and resilient society, and prevent incompetence and meanness.

There’s a connection between birding and literacy.

American literacy involves using English Language Arts  like reading, writing, speaking, and listening to perceive and interpret facts in order to understand the world and communicate effectively.

The aspect of  birding that most affect literacy are observation (describing what and where), and discernment (accurately analyzing facts to draw conclusions).

Birders use binoculars (bins), notebooks, cameras and recorders to document their findings.  They start with making decisions – like where to travel to, what time of day to get there, and what they hope to see.  Later they determine what they actually saw, and draw comparisons and conclusions about what it meant.  These are great life skills to have.

Additionally, watching the wild migrating birds come in and depart  gives great comfort – just knowing that whatever is happening –  life goes on like the moon rises and the sun sets.  It’s through language that we’re able to get the story out that there’s always hope for a new day.  Thank God for that.
