The general consensus in America right now is that we live in an AI driven world and that’s reality.
However, there’s a concerning debate that AI might kill us all if not reigned in, and secondly, that we should limit access to AI and social media until children are able to understand and handle it.
On the second point, we’re seeing electronic devices like phones turned in at the beginning of the school day and picked up at the end of the day in some schools around the country. This makes managing AI in schools a first step toward solving the larger problem of keeping AI under human control.
New York City is likely to become the epicenter of the AI management fight, just as Minneapolis became the model for fighting the abuses of Immigration, Customs and Enforcement (ICE). In New York City, for example, Mayor Mamdani’s administration has put a one year moratorium in place to prevent children in K2 through 8th grade from accessing generative AI.
In high school, children will gain access to AI in the classroom only after attending a class on how to use it properly. These actions are the beginning.
However, what may prove to be needed the most are AI Alternatives (AA), which focus on human development and preserving the best of American culture first, and adapting to technology second.
Elements of Helen’s Place LLC’s education model called “Elacogn” (standing for English Language Arts and Cognitive Science), might be useful in curriculum development.

Per YouTube description, “New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for students from 2-K through Grade 8. The policy will affect around 600,000 students in the nation’s largest school district.
AI companion chatbots are banned across all grades, while high school students will have limited, supervised AI use and AI literacy classes. The city will also review education technology and recommend screen-time limits for students.”
